Sometimes rucksacks can be quite tricky to identify even when they have a name on.
Made from canvas and leather, the Karrimor Aiguille we have here in the collection would seem to be an early version (circa 1970) since later extendable versions seen in the 1970’s Ellis Brigham catalogue opposite would appear to be a later model.
Karrimor were always looking to improve their range as well as creating new models. It was a European wide market(and still is) so rucksack names were designed to capture the imagination. The Aiguille would look cool on a French Telepherique, the Fjorland would help you breeze through Norway and the Himalaya might get you to Everest base camp!
Having started life in 1946 when Charlie and Mary Parsons started making saddle bags for bicycles before graduating onto rucksacks, Karrimor was a major player in the rucksack world for decades.
Expansion, contraction and various financial woes led the company to bankruptcy in 2003. The trading name Karrimor still exists though in 2023 it was owned by Sports Direct.
