Leather belay gloves.

Although they had been around for sometime before that, belay plates (see elsewhere in the collection ) were not generally used by British climbers until the late 1970's. Prior to that a 'belay' was made by wrapping the rope around the climber's shoulder or waist and twisting it round the hand. If a lead climber took a big fall, the 'belayer' often got rope burns so many wore gloves to avoid the pain. They would be clipped to the climber's belt when not in use,
