Though the memories fade as the generations pass, Tom Weir, was Scotland’s best ‘well kent’ outdoor manny for many a decade towards the end of the last century, contributing his ‘My Month’ article in the ever popular Scots Magazine year on year, writing books and starring in his own TV programme, Weir’s Way.
These rather odd looking crampons once belonged to Tom, and looking at the advert opposite, it would be logical to assume that he got them from Blacks of Greenock circa 1966.
They seem to have been made in Ljubljana, Slovenia, with Brevet RPPY No 24 being the trademark or patent.
Tom’s wife, Rhona, kindly gave us some of Tom’s gear not long after he died. You will find them elsewhere in the collection.
Characteristically, on handing over the crampons she commented that they were a a ‘bit of a boorach’
