Hanwag was formed in 1921 by a German shoemakers son called Hans Wagner who took part of his first name 'Han' and part of his second name 'Wag' to make the company name. The quality of his shoes was very good as he used a system of double stitching which was unusual at the time. This quality has been Hanwag's hallmark over the years as they have progressed from shoes to mountaineering boots and, in 1970, to alpine ski boots. This pair date from around 1970, and belonged to Mountain Guide, Bill Newton.
