Casualty bags (cas-bags) are basically large sleeping bags used for keeping mountain rescue casualties warm during evacuation from the mountains. Early versions were just household blankets but as they were not waterproof, bespoke versions started to appear in the 1950's/60's
(some of which we have in the collection) and there have even been experiments using bubblewrap!
In 2000 the Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland received a grant of several thousand pounds from the Katherine Smith Memorial Fund to develop a new rescue stretcher and in conjunction with this, Paul Rosher of Skye MRT began development of a new casualty bag calling it the Secure Casualty System(SCS). The one we have here in the collection is an early prototype and compliments the prototype stretcher which we also have - it's called the Katie in memory of Katherine Smith. Both the Katie and the SCS are in production and comercially available in 2012.
