The successful ascent of Mt.Everest in 1953 was perhaps the most important milestone ever in the world of mountaineering and we are delighted to have an oxygen set from that expedition in our collection. This particular set, as far as we know, was used by expedition member, Mike Wesmacott, but is not the one that went to the summit, though in all the classic photographs of Sherpa Tensing on the summit of Everest, a similar oxygen set can be seen on his back. Much information on this expedition is available so it seems superfluous to repeat it here and we will have some interesting info on the subject in our archive fairly soon.
This particular set was given to Mick Tighe on a long term loan by the principal of Plas-y-Brenin, the National Outdoor Centre in North Wales; it had lain in his office for many years gathering dust. We are happy to look after it for now, but if anyone knows of a better place for it to be, please get in touch.
