Pair of Norwegian 'Amundsen' skis fitted with metal plate and leather toe strap and canvas foot plate. Possibly the oldest set of skis in Scotland.

Dating from around 1910, these are probably the oldest skis we have in the collection and most likely the oldest pair in Scotland.
Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer well known for his race against Scott to the South Pole, which he won - arriving on December 14th 1911.
It's unlikely that this type of ski was invented by Amundsen, since this style goes back well before his time. The most likely story is that he used this type of ski and they became 'associated' with him.
The original binding has been replaced by a more recent (1920's) Marius Erikson binding.
