Accrington, Lancs, England
Better known for their vast range of rucksacks, Karrimor did produce a variety of clothing items as well back in the early days and these oiled cotton mitts were part of their portfolio in the 1970’s.
Gore-Tex was pretty embryonic then and oiled cotton was the trend of that era.
The idea was to wear a pair of finger gloves inside, making it easier for navigation and fiddling with climbing gear in winter. The over mitts could be attached to a wrist loop via the little white tag seen in the picture opposite, making it easier to slip on and off without losing them.
Various other materials like Gore-Tex and Thinsulate allowed lighter mitts and finger gloves to capture the market so oiled cotton mitts were no more.
