Provenance

The word karabiner comes from the German karabinerhaken which literally means rifle hook and refers to the hook or clip that was used to attach the carrying sling to a rifle in days gone by. Karabiners for mountaineering started to appear in the 1920's and the early ones had a simple locking system which we now call a snaplink. Screwgates came later in a successful attempt to make the simple snaplink stronger and safer. A further refinement was to make the screwgate lock automatically when closing to make it even safer. Clog were one of - if not the first - manufacturers to produce a twistlock in the UK in the 1970's - a couple of well used ones which we have here in the collection. Quite where they came from we are not sure but it is good to have them.
