Provenance

Mountaineers have needed light to find their way around in the dark since the sport began. The candle lanterns of yesteryear have given away to the Light Emitting Diode of the second millenium. Various lamps and torches have filled the breach in between and this was one of them. Headlamps were the norm for individual use in the 1970's, but mountain rescue teams needed something a little more powerful when searching at night. This torch, which was probably designed to go in the boot of a car, was pressed into service with Lochaber Mountain Rescue Team at some point, the red light being handy for marking locations/casualties and signalling helicopters. Lights got bigger and more powerful as time moved on and this torch was abandoned in a cupboard from where Mick Tighe liberated it.
