Provenance

Papoose is the Algonquian Indian for a child, though the word seems to have been adapted to mean a device for 'carrying' a child. Cradleboard is another word used for the same kind of thing but papoose sounds better and that's probably why Karrimor decided to use the word for their child carrier when it first came out back in the 1960's and we wonder if this was the first child carrier produced purely for recreational purposes.
Anyway, our old friend Chris Robinson donated this particular 'papoose' to the collection, providing us with this wee note at the same time:_
"It once bore my son Neil up Cow Hill. As I was running down I tripped and he was catapulted, human cannonball like, into a clump of heather ten yards away. No surprise he took to canoeing rather than base jumping!"
