British Royal Marine Commandos were sent to learn skills of Arctic Warfare up in North Norway in the 1970's as these were the days of the Cold War when the 'West' feared that the Russians were about to invade Europe and Norway would be one of their targets.
The Marines were issued with a mixture of Canadian cold weather warfare gear, (nobody seemed to know why!) and some Norwegian, which was fairly obviously better.
Founder of the Scottish Mountain Heritage Collection, Mick Tighe, was one of these Marines so he has a special interest in the gear. He was therefore delighted to find this 1960/70's Norwegian camouflage suit for sale in an ex-army store in Bødo, North Norway during a visit in 2013.
The Norwegian versions were made of cotton which was 'whiter' than the Canadian nylon versions. The marines later developed a reversible version (see related items)
