A helicopter crewman's flying suit is perhaps not the most obvious thing to find in a mountain heritage collection, though this one comes with a fairly good mountain pedigree.
Mick Anderson was for many years - in the 1970/80's - a winch man/ crewman on the RAF Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopters that were involved in hundreds of rescue missions in the mountains of Great Britain. An inveterate pipe smoker, Micky was well known to many mountain rescuers, particularly in Scotland.
Mick headed off to the greater ranges in 2014 and while his family and some old RAF pals were winding up his estate they found this flying suit and donated it to our collection.
Thanks folks for this unusual piece of mountain history.
Donated by Dave Whalley on behalf of family and friend of Mick Anderson
