Alice and Roy Holubar started selling outdoor gear in Colorado way back in 1946, initially with ex-army sleeping bags and later with parkas, backpacks and pitons. It seems that some of the pitons were made by a local blacksmith and are stamped with 'Colorado' or 'Boulder Colorado', they have subsequently become much sought after by collectors. Apparently, Roy Holubar had Austrian connections and at some point production of the pitons was handed over to Stubai in Austria with their pitons having 'Austria, Holubar and Boulder, Colorado stamped on them- even more varieties for the collector!
The three Holubars that we have here in the collection are fairly simple examples, without a Colorado or an Austrian stamp, and we think they are pretty early versions, probably from the 1950's.
They came from fellow collector, Art McCarthy, over in Colorado. He and Mick Tighe got a wee trade going in 2013; Art sends his excess American gear to Mick and Mick sends his excess British gear to Art - a good deal!
