Provenance

Recreational Equipment Inc.(REI) is an American Member-Owned Co-operative which specialises in sports apparel, outdoor sporting equipment and mountain climbing gear. It seems to have begun life way back in 1938 and looks very healthy in 2015 with well over a million members, many of whom are part of a Japanese section!
We are not sure if REI make their own karabiners, or have them made elsewhere, but one way or another we have two well worn versions here in the collection. They belonged to pioneer rock climber and Mountain Guide, Ed Grindley, and probably date from the 1980's. Ed passed away, somewhat prematurely, in 2012 and his wife, Rona, kindly donated some of his gear to the collection.
