In a world where we can get anything we need from outdoor shops to equip ourselves for the mountains it's hard to imagine a time when things were not quite the same. The climber, walker or mountaineer of the 1950's would be using lots of ex-army gear coupled with old work clothing and items from other outdoor folk such as motorcyclists who, like mountaineers, spent lots of time out in the cold and wet.
An excellent example of this are the motorcycle goggles we have here in the collection which were used by Scottish mountaineer, Bill Skidmore, who no doubt found them ideal for protecting his eyes in a blizzard. Interestingly, the photo opposite is of the Creag Dubh Mountaineering Club, many of whom worked in the Glasgow shipyards and we suspect they are wearing welders goggles which would keep out snow, wind, rain and sun!
