The Primus Stove was invented in 1892 by a Swede named Frans Wilhelm Lindqvist and by the 1930's just about every outdoor enthusiast in the UK had one. They also had lots of bikes since the motor car was still pretty much in its infancy and most folks couldn't afford one anyway.
The problem then was how to load all your camping gear onto your bike for a camping trip. The George Dalton photo opposite shows bikes so laden with gear they couldn't actually be ridden so had to be pushed everywhere.
A little bit of help came in the 1930's when a firm called Terry's created a small clip for attaching a Primus Stove to the cross-bar of a bike. It was also fairly common for some sort of clamp to be brazed onto the stove for the same purpose and since this was often done in the Glasgow shipyards they were sometimes called Glasgow Clamps, whereas the production clamp which we have here became known as a Terry Clip. We do have the Glasgow version in the collection too.
This lovely little piece of camping history was kindly donated by Walter Biggin from Kinross. It belonged to his father.
