Provenance

Based in Sion, Switzerland, Mammut began life way back in 1862 primarily as a rope making company and has progressed to become one of the giants of the outdoor equipment industry. Most British mountaineers will know Mammut for producing very good, but very expensive clothing and whilst Mammut do have a large selection of technical climbing gear, very little of it is seen in the UK. The European Alps and the USA are their main markets.
It doesn't appear that technical climbing gear is Mammut's forte as evidenced by the Bi-coin/Bi-Keil which we have here in the collection. It appeared in 1969 - not to universal acclaim.
There were three sizes, the largest of which we have here in the collection and whilst being simple, light and relatively cheap, they didn't sit well in cracks. They did enjoy some popularity in the granite cracks of the Alps but very few made their way over to the UK.
This particular one was donated by our pal, Hugh Clarke, a British Mountain Guide, who, rather ironically, is based in Switzerland.
