Though they hailed from south of the border, the names of Steeple and Barlow will forever be associated with the Cuillin of Skye. It seems they began their Cuillin campaigns back in 1906 and, having survived the war, began again in 1919. Unusually, for those based south of the border, sometimes referred to as the ' genus pock puddin' they edited the first rock climbing guide to Skye in 1923, a credit to their unique knowledge of this iconic mountain range.
It seems that Barlow climbed in Norway and many other places around the world but Skye was his first love.
Not surprising then that his rope and rucksack ended up in the Glen Brittle Memorial Hut when he passed away in 1969. The British made Wanderlust Rucksack dates from around 1930. Indeed, the 1930 Alpine Journal recommends it to its readers and carries the advert opposite. The rope appears to be made of manila or sisal which is unusual as hemp was the norm back in the day.
The management committee of the Glen Brittle Memorial Hut donated this fine little piece of Scottish Mountaineering history in 2016.
