Charlie Parsons started making and selling saddle bags and other bicycle accessories at Waterfoot in Lancashire in the 1930's. From that small beginning, the huge international company of Karrimor was born; a company which at one time was one of the biggest rucksack manufacturers in the world.
Though now owned by faceless money men, Karrimor was still very much a family concern back in the 1970's. The director was Charlie's son, Mike, and mum was still working away at a sewing machine, albeit a more modern version than her old 1930's one.
There was a huge range of Karrimor rucksacks around back then and this Outward Bound version was designed specifically for that market; simple, hard wearing and well priced.
We are not quite sure where this one came from though the HG initials stamped on it are a clue - thanks HG whoever you are.
Karrimor got an unexpected sales boost in 1981 with the issue of a 25th Anniversary, Duke of Edinburgh Award stamp portraying a Karrimor rucksack and Karrimat.
