Though looking very much like a horse riding helmet, our old pal and retired mountain guide, John Cheesmond, tells us that he used it for climbing in the Alps back in the 1970's. Whatever its original purpose it would certainly protect the head, and the side flaps would protect against sun, wind and snow. The wearer would also 'cut a dash' in mountaineering circles with such trendy gear.
Gino of Paris seem to have been making helmets since way back in the 1930's and there are several versions on the internet commanding hefty prices. Motorcycle helmets seem to have been their speciality.
Many thanks to John for donating this fascinating wee item.
