Provenance

Founder of our Heritage Collection, Mick Tighe, was the National Training Officer for Scotland's mountain rescue teams from 1996-2004. At that time there were 23 separate teams and each year they would gather together for a joint training exercise.
Mick managed to get use of the Balmoral Estate in 2004 and asked Shell UK who sponsored the annual gathering, to provide a trophy for the Balmoral Challenge which was basically a stretcher race around Balmoral Castle - the Queen was not in residence!
The trophy was won by Arrochar MRT in 2004 and by Tayside MRT in 2005. The 'challenge' seemed to have stopped after that and having languished in a cupboard for several years, Tayside MRT decided to pass the trophy to us in 2016.
