Although they look very much very much like ice axes these two fellas are Alpine walking sticks. Sticks are very popular in the alpine regions of Central Europe and it has become the norm to make them in the shape of an ice axe. Some of the cheaper versions are often called trophy sticks since thin metal badges ( trophies ) can be bought in nearly every alpine town and village to be attached to the stick with small metal pins - we have a nice example elsewhere in the collection.
The two we have here in the collection are very fine versions, more ice axe replicas than walking sticks though not strong enough to be used as axes.
One has the Stubai of Austria markings and dates from the 1950's, the other is a very fine model though without markings. It probably dates from around 1930. We bought the Stubai one on the internet for a few pounds but we are not sure how the other one arrived.
