Provenance

The Simpson family took themselves off to Resolute Bay in Canada in 1969 and attempted to reach the North Pole; the story is told in Myrtle Simpson’s book, Due North, published in 1970.
Hugh Simpson was working at Minneapolis University for a while prior to departure and went along to the local police chief to ask his advice about which gun he should take along for shooting polar bears.
“A pistol” was the answer,” You can wield it in a tent and also keep it warm under your anorak”
As a present he gave Hugh 6 pairs of the type of glove the local police use on skidoos, when the temperature falls way below freezing.
No polar bears in our collection but we’ve got the gloves!
