Petersen & Dekke were a Norwegian knitwear company based in Bergen, established in 1887 and often known by their shorter name, Pedek. Their high quality, woollen knitwear, was very popular amongst North Sea fishermen so no surprise that the British Antarctic Survey acquired hundreds of their jumpers back in the 1950/60’s to equip crews heading down onto the ice.
Unfortunately for BAS and fortunately for us, several returning crew members forgot to hand back their jumpers when returning to the UK where some were used to destruction on various outdoor activities and others squirrelled away in the loft. Ex BAS operative, Richard Walker, rediscovered this one in 2018 and kindly passed it on to us.
Petersen & Dekkes merged with a company called Teksal in 1965 but seem to have gone into receivership by 1976.
Vintage Petersen & Dekke clothing items are still quite prolific on the internet, a credit to their durability.
