Founder of the Heritage Collection, Mick Tighe, had a pair of Greenlander boots when he was a young Royal Marine back in the 1970’s and the pair we have here in the collection were issued to a member of the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) when they were down on the ice in the same era.
Other than that we don’t know an awful lot about them except that they were more waterproof than other boots at the time and seemed to be more comfortable - probably because the leather quality and construction was of a high standard.
We have lots of old equipment catalogues here in the archive but none of them show Greenlander boots. This makes us think they were made for the military and not generally available on the open market.
Interesting whatever and something we would like to know more about.
Thanks to ex BAS man, Richard Walker, for donating them.
