Silva are probably better known for their simple baseplate compasses than for the GPS ( Global Positioning System) version. They produced 25 million of the baseplate variety in 1990 and launched their first satellite navigator in 1992, a time when satellite navigational systems literally went global.
Whilst the simple baseplate compass remains ever popular in the UK, the Silva GPS is less so, with Garmin probably being the most popular.
Donated by Willie Jefffrey, the Silva GPS we have here in the collection seems to be a fairly early version - we guess late 1990’s - and makes a nice edition to our ever growing collection of gadgets.
PS Is there a collective noun for electronic gadgets? The Polish use ‘elektronika’
