It took climbers a hundred years or so to realise that helmets were a good idea and a few smashed skulls helped prove the point. A company called Compton were making motorcycle helmets back in the 1950’s and they were the first folk to develop a climbing helmet.
There have been a multitude of versions since, and this Troll helmet is one of them. International safety standards have been applied along the way and early versions of this helmet were recalled by Troll having been deemed unsafe by the British Mountaineering Council’s Technical Committee.
Produced in May 2001, this one seems to be the new, safer version though we haven’t been brave enough to test it.
All helmets of glass fibre/ plastic construction have a limited shelf life since the material breaks down over time, particularly in bright sunlight.
So think twice about using a helmet that is more than five years old; if it’s ten years old chuck it in the dustbin!
