Kong
Italy
Another Kong of Italy look alike; this time it’s a version of a Petzl Ascender albeit with a few ‘tweaks.’ Formally known as Bonaiti, Kong seem churn out lots of gear that appears to have originated elsewhere- check out the other Kong items in our collection.
As with the Petzl version, we assume this one is aimed at the caving and industrial rope access (IRATA) market. We also think this is a fairly early version, possibly 1990’s, and interstingly we can’t find this version on the Storric website(storric.cnc.net) which lists just about every ascender ever made - looks like ours is a bit of a rareity and it could be that it was unsafe and withdrawn - wouldn’t surprise us!
In mint condition and probably/ wisely never used the ‘oddity’ we have here in the collection was kindly donated by Ken Rawlinson, one time director of Phoenix Mountaineering.
We just noticed when photographing this item that it doesn’t have the UIAA stamp which is an international mark of authenticity - the Petzl version does have one- interesting.
