Provenance

German company, Edelrid seem to have begun life in 1863 when Julius Edelman and Carl Rider started making braids and cords. They have been producing functional but pretty mediocre gear ever since.
As a German company, we assume that’s where their biggest market lies, and maybe elsewhere on the continent. They have never been a huge player in the UK and their rather poor climbing ropes were pretty much hounded out in the early 2000’s.
The Alpine Light harness we have here in the collection dates from 1997 and doesn’t appear to have been used. It displays the classic Edelrid mediocrity, danger even, whereby the buckle and method of fastening illustrated on the info box sewn into the harness ( see pic opposite) is not the same as the one on the harness. Maybe that’s why our donator, Reginald Melton, never used it.
A quick search of our own website produces only three of Edelrid’s items; an indication of their limited impression on the UK market.
