Provenance

American alpinist, Yvon Chouinard, started making climbing gear at The Great Pacific Iron Works, California, way back in 1957 and there followed a range of well made, innovative and fashionable mountaineering items over the next three decades, many of which you will find elsewhere in our collection.
Chouinard Equipment Ltd. filed for bankruptcy in 1989 to avoid a liability lawsuit which, interestingly, arose from the use of a climbing harness. The company was subsequently reformed as Black Diamond and it is still trading in 2019.
The Black Diamond harness we have here in the collection is really a Chouinard with a Black Diamond logo. The 1980’s style of tying on is now obsolete, replaced by an easier and safer system.
