The ‘make do and mend’ mentality that followed on from the Second World War, coupled with a lack of climbing shops and a certain amount of poverty, led to climbers having to make their own gear, much of which has found its way into our collection.
This wonderful, homemade piton hammer is a classic example. Unfortunately, we don’t know who made it, though we do know it was a friend of Ken Rawlinson - Ken was financial director of Phoenix Mountaineering.
