Provenance

Rock climbers use bolts in the rock when there are no natural features to place pitons, nuts, wedges, cams etc. To place a bolt requires a hole to be drilled and an expansion bolt put in which then has a hanger attached into which a karabiner can be clipped - see the image opposite.
The use of bolts is/was frowned upon in the UK since drilling a hole is seen as a minor act of vandalism!
Some bolts are/were used though and we have an interesting anchor kit here in the collection produced by Troll in the 1960’s when they were used rather more than they are today.
We’ve included the remains of an old hand held drill as it was feeling rather lonely. Electric drills are now the norm.
Though bolts for rock climbing are pretty much history in the UK, they are used extensively in the European Alps and monster versions are used for industrial purposes.
