Pedometers have been around since at least, Victorian times, with some of the early versions having now become valuable collectors items. All the early versions worked on a form of pendulum which swung or bounced along with the walker, hopefully in time with his or her step. Early verrsions simply recorded the amount of steps or paces, others converted that information into yards and miles covered, and eventually metres and kilometres.
Technology, in particular the GPS system, quickly consigned the pendulum system to the history books as can be seen by the multitude of electronic devices on the market that can track your movements to a few centimetres.
Though not quite of the pocket watch style, Victorian grandeur of old, the Silva Walker Pedometer we have here in the collection dates from the 1990’s and would have hung on your belt as you wandered along, though quite how far you’d gone is a bit of a puzzle as the dial is not exactly user friendly!
