This probe style thermometer was used in the early days of the Scottish Avalanche Information Service (SAIS) to take readings in the different layers of snow which helped predict potential avalanches. The SAIS started back in 1988 under the then watchful eye of Blythe Wright and it is largely due to his efforts that we have the excellent daily avalanche reports in Scotland during the winter.
We think this thermometer dates from the early days - 1990’s - and has now been replaced by more up to date versions.
