Provenance

Stubai are an Austrian company that began life way back in the mists of time when a group of local blacksmiths got together, in a kind of consortium, to make agricultural machinery.
When the Golden Age of mountaineering came along in the 1860/70’s they diversified a little and started making ice axes for the early alpinistes.
Production expanded along with the sport of mountaineering and a variety of products appeared on the market as time went by.
This hammer was one of them. It dates from the 1950’s and like many ice tools from that era it has been shortened and the pick ‘drooped’ a little to make it easier to use on the steep ice climbs of the era.
Not quite sure where this one came from as we found it buried in a box of junk so thanks to the previous owner in absentia.
