Green,
The Telephone Set ‘D’ MK V was a portable instrument for field use in army formations forward of divisional headquarters. It had the following facilities:
1) Calls by buzzer
2) Response by the bell
3) Speech communication
4) Morse communication by buzzer and key.
There were and still are lots of these field telephones around after the Second World War, many of them finding their way into the government surplus stores. We are fairly sure that the pair we have here were acquired by the British Aluminium Company in Fort William and used for communicating on their narrow guage railway line which was used to maintain the hydro power station.
This type of phone was also used in the CIC hut on Ben Nevis in the 1950’s to communicate with Fort William Police Station in case of emergency - later replaced by radio.
Either way, this pair eventually found their way to Lochaber High School where they were ultimately destined for the skip. Fortunately, they were rescued by our friend, Morag Anderson, who kindly passed them on to us.
Donated by Morag Anderson.
