They call these pitons ‘Angles’ in the 1970’s Ellis Brigham catalogue opposite though most climbers call them ‘channels’, a pretty obvious choice when you look at them.
They were/are much loved by the winter climbing fraternity as the channel bites very nicely through any ice when hammered into an icy crack.
We have another bunch of these fellas elsewhere in the collection but kept these two separate since they are very early versions dating from around 1967/8.
The Clogwyn (later Clog) factory began making pitons from chrome molybdenum steel in 1966 and their early products had the simple Clog logo…later versions had an elipse around the Clog - see opposite. There’s more info along with some of our other Clog items.
These two little gems were kindly donated by Clare Cuthbertson on behalf of her late husband, Smiler.
