Chouinard
USA
Just the one rather battered Camalot here in the collection; the first generation of which appeared in 1987, itself a variation of the much celebrated ‘Friend’ created by Roy Jardine a few years earlier.
The Chouinard incorporated a double wire stem instead of the rigid stem of early Friends which could snap under heavy loading. The cams had a little more ‘travel’ which meant you needed a few less on your rack to cater for all crack sizes.
Chouinard became Black Diamond in 1989 as a result of a court case and Black Diamond went on making Camalots with a few of the early ones still bearing the Chouinard logo dating ours nicely to around 1988/89.
This one once belonged to American climber, Charlie Fowler, who came climbing with us on the Scottish island of Mingulay many years ago.
