Provenance

Ricardo Cassin (1909-2009) was an Italian Alpiniste of a very high calibre with a glittering array of first ascents in the Alps, many of which have become legendary. Like many of his ilk he put his name to many items of mountaineering equipment and started making it in his home town of Lecco in 1947, having spent much of the second World War as a resistance fighter against the Nazis.
We have one fairly early (circa 1950) Cassin karabiner here in the collection and we have chummed it up with another similar one, albeit a non screwgate version with no markings which is unusual. It could be a Cassin or a Stubai or possibly a homemade one since we know copies were made back in the 1950’s by local blacksmiths, engineers and in the shipyards.
Not sure about the D&J stamped on the Cassin…it could be a retailer or a previous owner’s stamp.
