British climbers are different to our Continental comrades in many ways; one of them is the type of climbing gear they wear.
The Brits almost universally use waist harnesses with leg loops and rarely anything for the upper body. This means that if they fall in a crevasse for instance, they will invert as there is more body weight above the waist than below. The good news is that there are not many crevasses in the UK!
Continental climbers don’t like hanging upside down in crevasses very much, or anywhere else for that matter, so they tend to use a full body harness linked to a waist harness. This raises the rope attachment point to chest level leaving you upright in the crevasse so that you don’t spill your coffee!
The German company, Edelrid, were expert rope makers in the 1960’s so no surprise then that they created this chest harness from a length of their rope.
