Simpson Lawrence & Co,
Glasgow, Scotland
Not the sort of thing you would carry around in your rucksack, but a very fine and unusual addition to our collection.
Simpson Lawrence were a Glasgow based company which seems to have begun life in 1908, making primarily, equipment for the yachting industry, the cooker we have here being a prime example.
Destined for the galley on a boat or yacht, most models had a wee guard rail around the top to stop the cooking pots sliding off, and others were gimballed ensuring the cooker stayed upright even when the boat didn’t. Amazingly, some were used on aeroplanes ..see the picture opposite.
The power source is two Primus stoves, a pretty scary business lighting one on a boat or plane.
The cooker we have here has an original Primus No 1 plus a Monitor stove which is probably a later addition/swap.
We reckon the cooker dates from 1920/30’s and we bought it on e-Bay for around £20.
