Provenance

The S and S Co. On the base of this little cookpot stands for S Sternau & Co. of Brooklyn, New York, who seem to have started making brassware in the 1880’s, a time when most ‘stoves’ were fired by a form by a form of alcohol, normally methylated spirit.
Sternau were well known for making rather upmarket brass items such as kettles, warming pans, bathroom fittings and candlesticks.
Our little brass pot seems fairly ‘small fry’ by comparison. It comes with a little spirit burner which is not brass and doesn’t have the S&S Co. Logo so may not be original.
There would probably have been a wee trivet on which to stand the pot so that the burner could go underneath, a few stones would probably do the same job in camp. It is missing a handle which would slot in the side for pouring but it is rather nice and probably dates from the 1920’s.
