They called him the ‘Fox of Glencoe’, the wily, ubiquitous Hamish MacInnes (1930-2020), a true legend in Scottish Mountaineering. Much could be, and much has been, written about him, not least the biography ‘Hamish’ which appeared in 2023.
Remarkably, Hamish, along with his pal John Cunningham, had tried to climb Everest in 1953, hoping to use some of the gear left behind by the, unsuccessful, Swiss expedition the year before. Unfortunately, Hamish and John failed on that occasion, but Hamish returned in 1975 with a rather larger entourage, a bigger budget…..£100,000 rather than £100….and now as duputy leader to Chris Bonnington. They were attempting to climb the SW Face.
A company called Mountain Equipment provided much of the down clothing for the expedition and the one we have here in the collection belonged to Hamish. It was kindly donated by Graeme Hunter, a good friend of Hamish’s and executor of his will.
we have lots of other Hamish items..just Put MacInnes into the search box and you’ll find them.
