Provenance:
Not the sort of clothing item normally seen during a day out on Ben Nevis, though it might come in handy during the rainy season! There is, however, a mountaineering connection as these immersion suits were often worn by helicopter Search and Rescue crewmen and women during mountain rescue missions throughout the UK. Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopters cover both land and sea with crewmen often being dumped in the sea during a rescue and, never knowing what type of rescue would happen next, crewmen would sometimes end up doing a mountain rescue in an immersion suit, though preferred option would be to don the suit in flight if going to a sea rescue. Beaufort would seem to have been the preferred provider of these suits during the 1990s, though no doubt there are plenty of other versions around.
