Our old friend and Mountain Guide,Dave Cheesmond, donated this simple device with a wee note attached:-
“Homemade wire extender for reaching across bolt gaps
(Kilnsey overhang) Yorks 1960’s”
Though now climbed free, Kilnsey overhang was an artificial climb in the 1960’s and the bolts were too far apart for some folk, requiring a long reach to clip your karabiner from which an etrier (small rope ladder) would hang to facilitate the next move. The karabiner gate could be held open with an elastic band during the operation. Dave calls it an ‘extender’ but they were commonly called cheating sticks.
The one we have here is simply made from a piece of fencing wire but if we fast forward a decade or so we have upmarket versions, in varying lengths, called ‘clipper sticks’ – it seems the art of cheating has been perfected!
