Provenance:
Denny Moorehouse was the founder of Clog Mountaineering Equipment, but somewhere along the way the money men got the better of him and he was forced to abandon his own company. Denny Moorehouse Mountaineering (DMM) was his new company and with it Denny continued to produce innovative products for the mountaineering fraternity – this ice screw being one of them.
The Russians flooded the European market with cheap (and sometimes nasty) titanium ice screws in the 1980s and this would seem to be Denny’s riposte. It’s a drive-in, screw-out ice piton which appeared in 1987 and initially called a SCRUBE (SCRew /tUBE). There were various lengths and all kind of tweaks to the design, such as making the ‘eyes’ bigger to allow removal with an ice axe pick, and increasing the size of the slot for removing ice core. The first Scrubes were made of chrome moly, we think these titanium version were next, and there was a stainless steel version too.
This particular one came from Mick Tighe’s Mountain Guiding Company, Nevis Guides, and seems to have been well hammered.
