Provenance:
These beautifully cared for boots were donated by Mrs Jean Green whose late husband, Don, had been a member of the Grampian Mountaineering Club – a fairly active one by all accounts. The FEB stands for Frederick Ellis Brigham and maybe a wee bit of history wouldn’t go amiss.
It was 1929 when Frederick Ellis Brigham, a Yorkshire man, launched his own business in Conran Street in the Harpurhey district of Manchester. He was a bootmaker by trade and cycled for a hobby. He had scooped a 100 mile speed record so his obvious products were cycling and running shoes which he hand-sewed in a cellar below his house and shop.
Just before the war, when climbing became more respectable and hill walking more popular, he branched out into mountaineering boots.”Alpine Boot-maker” was the proud sign above his shop.
The Ellis Brigham brand went from strength to strength and in 2013 there are several of their stores, still operating successfully, throughout the UK
