Provenance:
“Magnifique ! What a world-class relief ! Crafted by Klaus Schwartz in late 1956 after my second ever visit to the Alps.
The contour lines of a section of a 1:25,000 map was copied onto numerous sheets of thin cardboard and cut, then glued on top of each other before features and names were added.
The section shows the then small village of Solden top left, the even tinier village of Zwieselstein bottom centre where the Otztal splits into the Vent Valley to the left and the Gurgl Valley to the right.”
This is what Klaus had to say about his magnificent creation in 2025, 69 years after he made it. While not exactly Scottish mountain heritage, it’s a fabulous timepiece of the tale when computers were yet to be capable of imaging on this scale and folk had their own way of doing things. Klaus also included a photo of his father in Solden at the time, another example of days gone by when packhorses were used instead of helicopters.
