Høvik Verk paraffin stoves are the Norwegian version of their Swedish neighbours, Primus. Indeed, they actually made stoves for the Swedish company BA Hjorth (aka Primus) for a while, from 1953 to 1961. These stoves being Høvik’s only export models since their own brand was pretty much restricted to the Norwegian market which has made them a bit of a rarity elsewhere.
Christiania (old name for Oslo) Glasmagasin began life in the 1700’s making glass products, though they diversified as the years went by into lamps and lighting and at some point started retailing Høvik Verk paraffin stoves, a fine example of which we have here in the collection.
Translating nowadays as the Oslo Glass Store, Christiania Glasmagasin, have customised the tin with a fine brass plaque and it looks like ‘someone’ has repainted the tin at some point.
Høvik is a suburb of Oslo and Verk means Works or Mill.
